Characteristics of a Trusted Financial Advisor or Counselor A financial advisor is often thought of as a licensed professional who gives you counsel or advice on your finances, but I think each of us needs more than that. We need people we can trust around us who would give us not only sound advice, but good Biblical advice as well. We need people who will not try to get us to do what they want, but rather what is best for us and our financial situation. So how do you find someone or multiple people like that? Same BeliefFirst, they must be on the same page with you spiritually. As a believer, our closest and most trusted advisors should also be believers. They should also be in similar levels of financial understanding. I’m not saying that you cannot learn from a new believer who has minimal financial experience, but you are going to want a more seasoned believer as your most trusted advisor. Same Financial GoalsSecond, they must be on the same page with you in your financial understanding. Personally, I do not believe we need to incur any debt including home mortgages while many people think that is okay. So I am going to make sure that my closest advisors believe the same. CaringThird, they need to be caring and compassionate. I do not want someone who is not going to be caring and listen to what I have to say before offering their advice. That would not make me feel valued and like I was getting genuine advice. I’m also going to want someone who is compassionate when I’m frustrated about how things are going financially. Understanding of Financial MattersFourth, I want someone who has a good understanding of finances. I do not want someone who does not even know how to balance a checkbook or what a stock is. It does not mean this person has to know everything. They just need a basic understanding and a willingness to learn new things too! So who should this person be? If I am married, the first and closest person should be my spouse. My spouse and I might then also talk with his and my parents together as well as a close friend or someone in my congregation. Now if I am single, it would be my parents. And again, I might also consider close friends or a congregational member. But the most important key is that whenever I seek advice, I must first and foremost ask my Heavenly Father and then make sure that the earthly advice lines up with His Word!
