What Computer Should I Buy?What computer should I buy is a question I am often asked. Since I grew up on computers and work on them every day, I have learned a lot about the computers that I like, what works, and what does not work. I hope to share some of that hands on learning with you to help you out on your search for the perfect computer. First of all, begin by deciding what you need in a computer. Do you need a computer that is small and very portable? Or do you need something to do a lot of graphic design on? Are you just using it to take notes in meetings and check e-mail? Knowing your purpose of use will help you decide what features are the most important for you. Since I do web design as well as create videos, write a lot, and so much more on my computer, it was important to me that I have a widescreen (17” compared to the normal 14” to 15”) as well as a large RAM (the power that makes my machine go at a good speed) and a good size storage for all my files. My aunt only uses her computer to check e-mail, listen to a weekly Shabbat service, and do a bit of internet browsing, so I encouraged her towards a light-weight laptop that was a 15” screen. It has about half the memory of mine, but her price tag was about half of mine as well! Next, decide on your operating system. Now, I know this will spark a huge debate – PC or Mac (short for Macintosh). I am personally a PC user. Why? That is what I started out with and have continued on since I have many software programs that are PC driven. It would cost me a couple of thousand to replace all my perfectly good software if I went to Mac. Also, at my previous job, I had to have a PC in order to connect in remotely to their computer system, so those two things ruled out a Mac. I have very good friends who are extremely happy with their Macs. In fact, I was told that I run my PC as close to a Mac as possible in the way I have my folders and programs set up. So I would encourage you to look at needed software compatibility, work remote access, and your purpose in the machine. Finally, brand and features. I have personally always used a Hewlett Packard machine. I have found them to overall be very stable, well maintainable, and fair warranties. I like to purchase my machines at Sam’s Club as I can get a good extended warranty which provides me service with US based customer service – a rarity! Dell is another good brand that I have friends who have very happily used it. Acer is not the best brand from all my personal experiences. I have heard a few too many horror stories to feel comfortable recommending them. And of course, if you go Mac, you’ll be getting an Apple. And just to make all you Mac users happy, I love my iPad! Speaking of which, I’ll be blogging on choosing the best tablets and computer accessories next week. Then once you have decided on brand, you’ll want to look at all the features and see which model best fits your needs based on your answer to my first question as well as what fits in your price range. |
