House Cleaning on a Budget I clean houses a couple of days a week, so I have learned some great ways to clean on a budget with minimal cost and great results. Here are the items you will find in my cleaning tray and why. 1. Good RagsGood rags that do not leave lint behind. These can be old towels and wash clothes. They are often the best at getting rid of dirt and yet not scratching anything. If you are just starting a household, you can pick up inexpensive wash clothes for about $5 for a pack of nine. 2. All Purpose CleanerI take a spray bottle and fill it one-fourth full of white vinegar. Add a few drops of dish soap. Then I fill the bottle with water the rest of the way. This is a great all purpose cleaner. It even works to remove soap scum! I use this on everything in the bathroom – sink, tub, and toilet as well as other appropriate hard surfaces. 3. Windex©Windex is still the go to product for mirrors and other glass surfaces. This also works great to clean the fronts of your kitchen appliances. 4. Furniture PolishFurniture polish is needed for anything wood. I use a traditional store option such as Pledge© for most wood furniture; however, a few items in our house are from Amish Country and made with a lighter finish. These items require a special wood polish which is a bit more costly. However, I will typically dry dust them each week and only use the polish once every couple of months as they do not hold the dust like traditional wood furniture either! 5. Magic Eraser©While I do not like the name of the Magic Eraser© it is an amazing tool. I use it on the bath tubs to remove any stuck on scum as well as on the glass shower doors to get them clean. It gets all the scuffs off the vinyl flooring too. 6. Paper TowelsPaper towels are something you just do not want to be without when cleaning. Sometimes there is something just really yucky to get out of the corners! 7. Toilet Bowl CleanerToilet bowl cleaner and brush is the only other necessary portable item unless you have something that requires special care such as wood floors. 8. Vacuum and MopVacuum and Mop make floor care really simple. A good vacuum will have the attachments that allow you to not only get the floor clean, but also get in the crevices and along the floorboards. People typically think of a mop and bucket; however, I prefer either a Shark© steam mop which only uses water and then steams your floor clean or using a rag and vinegar water. Either option is very inexpensive. The Shark© is an initial investment of about $80 and will last a long time. The vinegar water and rag runs very little each week. So you can see that cleaning does not have to include lots of expensive tools, gadgets, and cleaners, but rather use of simple tools and cleaners gives you very cost effective savings. |
